ebola2Confirmation that two health care workers who had contact with an Ebola patient in a Dallas hospital have now contracted the disease has triggered a rigorous review of infectious disease protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). All health care providers including EMS personnel are encouraged to review and practice the proper use of PPE with special attention to the safe donning and doffing of gowns, gloves, masks/respirators, and eye protection. 

While Ebola is known to be spread by direct contact with bodily fluids, California's Department of Industrial Relations has suggested that EMS providers should consider applicable standards for Aerosolized Transmissible Disease in the use of PPE due to the uncontrolled environments and close patient contact experienced in prehospital care.

EagleshamJohn Eaglesham has been appointed Director of the Santa Barbara County EMS Agency. He will oversee the administrative activities of the EMS Agency and Public Health Emergency Preparedness program. John has worked for the County of Santa Barbara for the past 9 years, and brings a wealth of experience to EMS having worked in an executive management position for a nationwide ambulance firm and serving two years as Chairman of the Board of the California Ambulance Association. EMSAAC welcomes John to its Board of Directors!

Ebola1A patient identified as the first reported case of Ebola in the U.S. has died in a Dallas hospital. Thomas Eric Duncan was a Liberian who traveled from Liberia to Texas in late September. Two health care workers who treated Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital have also tested positive for the disease. The World Health Organization now reports the outbreak has resulted in over 4,400 deaths to date. 

The Centers for Disease Control has published a CDC Interim Guidance for EMS Systems. CDC has also released an EMS Checklist for Ebola Preparedness to assist EMS providers prepare their staff.

LapollaNancy Lapolla has taken her managing skills to San Mateo County EMS Agency. Nancy is a veteran EMS Administrator with many years experience guiding the development of quality EMS systems in Santa Barbara County. She is also a Past President of EMSAAC and currently chairs EMSAAC's active Disaster Committee. Nancy started with San Mateo EMS on September 8th. EMSAAC wishes her well in her new post.

logo-bodyEMSAAC's Disaster Committee and a committee from the California Conference of Local Health Officers (CCLHO) are working together to gather best practices from local health departments and EMS agencies related to the Medical Health Operational Area Coordinator (MHOAC) program. CCHLO and EMSAAC will be requesting EMS agencies and Local Health Departments to share copies of their MHOAC plan, or sections of emergency plans that document how the MHOAC program goes from day-to-day operations to MHOAC activation for any or all of the 17 MHOAC functions. The RDMHS will be contacting the MHOAC programs in each region regarding this project. The findings will be shared only with the EMSAAC and CCLHO Disaster committees. These committees will then use the information to develop a MHOAC Plan template and tool kit.
